"Life belongs to the living, and he who lives must be prepared for changes."
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
*** This issue's theme: C H A N G E
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have spoken often about the great rate of change we experience in our world.
In every circle, it seems, the pace keeps getting faster and more unrelenting.
Goethe, I'm sure, would have a more severe perspective if he were living (and
therefore preparing for changes) today. A key part of successfully dealing
with change is being able to adapt. Most of us believe we are quite adaptable
-- if only we could do it on our own timetable. And therein lies the rub. If
we had the time to figure out how to respond, we could. But Goethe's wise
words reveal that the work goes on before -- that we must "be prepared for
changes."
Observe some of the symptoms/effects of not being able to respond well enough
to change: general unhappiness, anxiety, chemical dependency, accidents,
compulsions, conflicts with other people, depression, divorce, illness,
phobias, loss of job, and sometimes in extreme cases, suicide. Well, it just
doesn't have to be so! THE FIRST STEP upward is to increase your awareness of
how to better cope with change.
Author Erik Olesen, in his book Mastering the Winds of Change, outlines a
step-by-step process towards regaining control of your life and actually
thriving on change. Erik took this idea on as a project, and researched all
the theories and strategies recommended by experts. Then he went into the real
world and interviewed what he called 'highly successful dragon tamers' to
discover exactly what they did. His criteria for selecting these people were
that they:
...handle change and stress well;
...had been successful for a long time,
or had become successful again after a challenging setback;
...appeared to lead balanced and happy lives. He extracted the processes and
successful strategies, then field-tested them with average people and
fine-tuned them in seminars and workshops.
In short, the Steps to Mastering Change are:
1) View change as a challenge.
2) Build your commitment through goals and passion.
3) Stay committed when the going gets tough.
4) Know when to control, when to let go.
5) Deal with setbacks and go forward.
6) Be optimistic.
7) Use humor.
8) Learn from mistakes.
9) Maintain perspective.
10) Tune the body.
11) Build self-confidence.
12) Communicate effectively, and connect with love.
Erik shows how to accomplish each of these steps with clear, actionable
strategies. This book is one of the most compact and useful resources I have
come across, and is on my personal recommendations list. --Lee Lukehart
