Subject: Lifescope TIPs & QUIPs [41] "The Global Village"

Dear Reader:

The Y6B problem? What's that, you ask? This is the year the
earth's population surpassed SIX BILLION! According to the
people who track this stuff, we turned the human odometer
sometime in late July. Yow! Now, that many b-b-billions may not
be very meaningful by itself, but when you look into the growth
rate, you get some perspective...

Six billion now? Why, back in the SUMMER OF LOVE we had less
than FOUR billion bodies to deal with! That was only thirty
years ago, folks! And you thought the Internet was happening!
(Yeah, maybe it IS growing faster than the population, but then
again, it takes up a lot less space.) Be sure to check out the
Topic section below for an interesting cross-section of who all
those people are.

By the way, you may have noticed that TIPs & QUIPs is now an official 
periodical, complete with an ISSN (Int'l Standard Serial Number).
That's supposed to be impressive (at least that's what the lawyers
tell us). Anyway, spread the word -- tell your friends about us.

 precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios 
 remaining the same, it would look like something like 
 the following.  There would be:

 57 Asians
 21 Europeans
 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
  8 Africans

 52 would be female
 48 would be male

 70 would be nonwhite
 30 would be white

 70 would be non-Christian
 30 would be Christian

 89 would be heterosexual
 11 would be homosexual

  6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth
   and all 6 would be from the United States

 80 would live in substandard housing

 70 would be unable to read

 50 would suffer from malnutrition

  1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth

  1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education

  1 would own a computer (a year ago less than 1% had a computer)

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the
need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly
apparent."

We obtained this scenario as a forward, originating at Stanford 
University in Palo Alto, CA. However, when we tracked down that 
source, he disclosed that he was not the original author. We have
no reason to suspect the data, but we try not to pass along hearsay.
